Hi, Bogomips.

Was thinking of fabricating a styrofoam
cooler and coiling the pump water hose to the pool through it filled with ice.

Maybe I'm being a bit thick but could you not just throw the ice into the pool water? Or are you planning to sit next to the returned water jet for maximum cooling effect?

I feel like you'd need an ice cube 3 feet squared to make a dent in the water temperature, though, and by the next day it would be warm again :\

Right now, from at least Indiana southward, they are recommending you stay inside and not go outside for any length of time. It has been 90+F with >
100F heat index values.

There is a difference when you are in the Sun... when I was in Superior,
AZ, it was wicked hot. When you get out in the Sun, it seemed to me that I felt it more on my skin. The air is not like "soup," though, as it would likely be at similar temperatures in the Gulf States. By the same token, it seemed like it was real difficult to keep my lips from drying out.

The main difference is in the shade. In AZ or Southern CA, if I found
myself in the shade, it didn't feel near as hot. I stopped at a rest area along I-10 in Southern CA. It was sunny and 100+F. They had a small area
set up with some trees and desert flowers. Even though the leaves on those trees are small (like locust trees), the shade felt *great*. There was
even a slight breeze under those trees.

In the shade in the SE, while you are not getting the direct sunlight,
you are still surrounded by the soupy air. Makes it a lot more difficult to cool off.

Being out in the Sun at those temperatures, in the SW or SE, is going to
get to you real quick.

We took the kids to the four Disney money pits/parks maybe 10 years ago or so, at the beginning of March. It was quite nice (mid 80s maybe), and less humid. We made it through one park per day, and had a day in between each to enjoy the lazy river at our resort. ;)

It was actually enjoyable in March, even.

Yes, March is very nice usually. It does get surprisingly cold here in winters though. Overnight lows get below freezing probably 10-12 nights
in Dec/Jan, and daytime highs are sometimes in the 30's, often 40's.

This past January we had all-time record breaking snowfall in Pensacola.
We got NINE INCHES of snow and it was absolute armageddon here. Not
kidding, most people here had never even seen snow of that amount. It actually stayed visible on the ground for about 3 days, quite amazing.
My dog had the best couple of days of his life... Hahaha

It's a small pool, only 12 feet round. I'm hoping it will have some cooling effect. My wife is thinkng of buying a shade cloth and some misters that help cool the water using the ambiant air, like we saw in Panama.

you mean evaporation?

i think the only way to cool a pool is to have a unit that pumps out the water, cools it and then returns it. even people that have these units say they don't work wonders.

I used to go to virginia every year and hit that whole region for vacationing. DC too.

man, a few times virginia beach was so hot, you'd have to stay inside the stores for short periods of time just to stay alive. it was like being in an oven. I've been all over the country so I've experienced a lot.

I think Wisconsin has it pretty good because it doesn't even get cold here anymore and everything's mild. it barely snows and doesn't even get that cold. now minnesota gets cold! I'm norwegian and i have some frost resistance, though.

this recent heat wave was real nasty. At my company some areas with machines have no air conditioning or what they have just couldn't keep up with the heat and humidity. Luckily I worked in AC.

Ah, ok. Yeah, winters aren't much to be excited about around these parts. The last few (or more) years have even been fairly snow-less, even up north. We may get 18" dumped on us at once, but it hasn't really stuck around. Kind of a bummer for avid snowmobilers, skiers, snowboarders, etc.

Correct.

My pool is 5k gallons and the water temp was 95F today. My wife is fine with that... but I cannot get in it when it is that hot. The only think that makes it better is if the wind is blowing like it has been all week, when you get out wet the wind cools you.

My 14yr old grandson got pissed at me today when I wouldn't go out and buy 20 bags of ice. He doesn't understand...

I'm just trying to cool the water temp a couple of degrees. I'm willing to invest a couple of dollars to experiment. even if i just lay a couple of bags of ice on the infeed and output hoses. Wish me luck

My pool has one of those 'airator' things, where it just sprays the water out of a little plastic spout that spreads it out and back into the pool while the pump is on. I can really feel the difference in temperature when I run the pump with that turned on. In fact, since my pool is fairly deep, I keep it off because it makes it TOO chilly. But for a smaller pool that gets to feel like bath water, it's an awesome feature. Not sure if all of them have that, or what.

It makes a difference when you run your pump, too. And right now I don't remember if daytime makes it cooler or not. Daytime helps with keeping the algea down during the summer, though.. so yeah, must be daytime.

i'm not so sure they suck up heat from the ground. i think it's via the sun. 12ft pools are still decent size. it's a lot of water

Just installed a spray fountain this morning. We'll see if there is any noticable change in water temp. At the end of the season we are going to buy a bigger pool when they are half price.

I hope you are doing proper science and rigging up home made temperature probes to measure the air and the water temperature. Preferably attached to an 8 bit micro of some kind so you can store and compare results with / without the spray running.
