• SBBS and binkd...

From Martin Kazmaier@VERT to All on Tuesday, June 02, 2026 15:16:00
Should an sbbs system running Linux be reporting that the binkd server is
1.1a 115? I'm not sure if this guy has a rogue server or what. It's
reporting that he's in russia with a different name and invalid AKAs. I
asked him to check his settings, but haven't heard back yet. He said it
worked at one point, but he's no longer receiving packets. The domain is pointing to the right IP address, but the information I'm getting from his system is nothing like what it should be...

I use binkd with Synchronet, no reason why you wouldn't and I reports

    binkd/1.1a-115/Linux

    so...

It's reporting that he's in russia with a different name and invalid
    AKAs.

That sounds like the info that is in the example configuration:

    address 2:5047/999@fidonet 2:5020/999.1@fidonet
    address 618:100/10@micronet 110:220/1@linuxnet

    sysname "Ivan's BBS"
    location "Magadan, Russia"
    sysop "Ivan Ivanov"

I'm doing my best but totally unfamiliar with sbbs. I'm hubbing him from EleBBS w/ fastecho and binkd. I don't know what to tell him about his setup.
Supposedly the russia info isn't in any of his config files or setup screens, but I'm certainly not making that up...

I was talking about the default config file for binkd. Probably named binkd.conf.

    Bye, Wilfred.

Sounds like he set his system up and changed "a" config file, but not the
    right one.

With SBBS, if he is using actual binkd, this could mean at least two things:

    (1) he has only made changes to the native SBBS sbbsecho.ini file, and in the scfg program, which would only work if you are using binkit. It would have
*no* affect on how binkd works. In order to run binkd with SBBS, you also
have to edit the binkd.cfg file to add your info.

    (2) he has made changes to a copy of the binkd.cfg file but his running
binkd instance is pulling an unchanged copy from somewhere else.

So, he needs to make sure he made his changes to binkd.cfg, and make sure his binkd instance is reading that copy.

    Mike

Yes, you can use binkd with Synchronet, instead of using the one that comes with Synchronet. Just like you can use a plethora of mailers with your BBS software.

If the sysop's name that his system is reporting is "Ivan Ivanov" with AKAs for both Fidonet and Linuxnet, then for some reason he's using the default configuration file for binkd.

Thanks! Yeah, he's running binkit and binkd. He was able to figure that
much out after all of these suggestions. Thanks guys! He thought he stopped binkd, but I'm getting the same results... Hopefully he can get this working so I can poll him properly.

Worst case scenario is that he can tell binkd to listen on another port,
which would allow binkit to answer your "calls" on 24554 without
    interference.

If he is trying to run them both, I would imagine that synchronet/binkit is probably complaining about the port already being in use (because binkd has already been bound to it). He should be able to see that in his logs.
